Alpine Wine and Dine

Old Man Winter kept a firm grip on the Midwest throughout March, inspiring the Chicago Mondiale to take a fanciful flight through the French and Italian Alps by way of some of its most sought-after wines. Along the way, they sampled grapes—some seldom seen in the United States—from the Rhone, Sovoie, Alto Piemonte, Alto Adige, and Valle d’Aosta regions.

The tour guides for this journey were Maître Sommelier Miranda Elliot, Illinois Sales Manager for Martine’s Wines, and CMS Certified Sommelier Matt Sussman. Sussman also acted as the evening’s host, welcoming the group to enjoy a meal of Alpine-inspired dishes, prepared by Executive Chef Justin Moser to celebrate the unique qualities of the wines.

During the casual reception, Mondiale members and guests enjoyed house-made charcuterie and breads along with a sparkling wine from the Savoie region. “This region is historically important for French sparkling wines,” said Sussman as he explained why he chose the non-vintage Thierry Tissot Bugey Brut. For the five-course meal, Somms Elliot and Sussman paired two wines with each of Chef Justin’s dishes to encourage a deeper exploration—and enjoyment—of Alpine wines.

To complete the “ski-lodge” experience, the meal was served fireside in the casual, glass-enclosed dining room of Sussman’s Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant Table, Donkey, and Stick. Named for a Brothers Grimm fairytale, the restaurant strives to reflect the convivial spirit of mountain inns that dot the Alps and to honor the food-and-drink traditions of the local villages. Despite the cold outside, everyone felt the warmth of the venue.
